ChatGPT free users are getting unlimited chats and a way to make it think harder
If you’ve ever hit ChatGPT‘s free message limit mid-conversation, that frustration is about to disappear. OpenAI is making GPT‑5.6 Luna the default model for free and Go users this week. And starting next week, they’ll also get unlimited text chats, so you don’t have to wait for a timer to reset. Users also get a new Think button that will offer deeper reasoning, a feature that was previously locked behind a paid plan.
Free users can finally ask more without watching the clock
The rate limit that forced free users to pause mid-conversation is going away for free-tier users. This means that it becomes more useful for long chats, follow-up questions, brainstorming, and basic research without forcing people into a paid plan.

Meanwhile, a new Think button gives Luna extra time to reason through harder questions instead of rushing a shallow answer.
The catch: Limits will still apply for file uploads, images, and other tools. The unlimited chats are also subject to abuse guardrails, so heavy automated use could still get throttled.
ChatGPT Paid and Plus users are also getting their own upgrade—a steadier, more fact-checked GPT 5.6 Sol with a new effort slider that controls how much thought the model puts into a response.
The bigger shift is that this rollout is really about giving free users a stronger default model without hitting a wall. It makes the tier feel far less restrictive. There’s nothing to set up as Luna becomes your default automatically this week.
